Bunya Pine planting

March 16, 2024

Our Conifer Gardens have some lovely specimens but one of our MonVols, John, pointed out that we were missing an iconic Australian conifer, Araucaria bidwillii, or Bunya Pine. Found in native rainforest as well as many old, large gardens, they are slow growing but in the wild can reach up to 50m tall when mature, after 30 years. Of great interest are their cones, which can get up to 35 cm in diameter and weigh up to 10 kilograms.

For this reason, our newly planted Bunya Pine has been given a very special location, near the Conifer Gardens but in a clearing of its own, so that in 30 years when those nuts fall they are not going to hurt any of our garden visitors!
