Dr A L North Conifer Garden

September, 2019

The Dr A.L. North Conifer Garden is a one hectare parcel of land stretching along the fence-line border on Bacchante Street, from the Valley at the bottom to Ridgewell Road at the top.

Dr Alan Lindsay North aka ‘Dick North’ was a renowned tennis player and the Head of Ophthalmology at St. Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. On retirement, Dick and wife Kay moved to Leura and became very involved in Mountains community life. They were supporters of the Society from its inception.

Dick North provided funds for a variety of projects including the construction of pathways, continuous planting and the building of the original Lodge. In 1988 Dick was honoured with Life Membership status and he was appointed Patron of the Society for the remainder of his life.

Upon his death in 1997, the Society received a substantial bequest and the Conifer Garden with is lower Proteaceae Garden were named in his honour.

The Garden was officially opened by Dick North’s great niece, local musician, teacher and choir leader Christine Wheeler in September 2019.
